Researchers have been capturing cosmic rays with different detectors for more than a century because their changing properties could serve as records of the solar system’s history, says Jamie Rankin at Princeton University.
A fully operational asteroid food project would require an “industrial-sized super machine” in space, he says, but the researchers hope to begin testing the idea on a smaller scale in the coming year, starting off with coal and then moving to meteorites that have fallen to Earth, which they are currently working on a proposal for.
“The space station audio system is complex, allowing multiple spacecraft and modules to be interconnected, and it is common to experience noise and feedback.” The feedback has no technical impact on the crew or the craft’s operations, it added.
When astronauts perform spacewalks, or extravehicular activities (EVAs), on the International Space Station, they don their suits and enter a sealed room.
Wilmore and Williams will have to stay on the ISS a bit longer, but they are veteran astronauts and have the experience and equipment to jump right into daily life in space until they can be brought safely back to Earth.
